Rhubarb Empanadas are little pockets of spring! These sweet dessert hand pies are filled with rhubarb and are perfectly portable.

I walked by the nest, glancing in out of habit, checking in to see if the baby birds were still all there, counting their heads each time. They had grown so big and raised a ruckus at feeding time, the cacophony always drawing me closer with a smile. But before I had a chance to peek in the nest, I noticed that all was silent in their little corner of the garden, and as I approached, I understood why.

They were gone.

Five Little Things I loved this week:

1. Blueberries

This kind of turned into blueberry week, didn’t it? The pints didn’t last long around here, between the Bakery Style Buttermilk Blueberry Muffins and the Grilled Halloumi Blueberry Salad I shared with you this week. But what you don’t know is that I’ve revisited Blueberry Muesli for breakfast, and I have plans to make Baby Back Ribs with Blueberry Balsamic Barbecue Sauce. Oh, and there will probably be Blueberry Buttermilk Cake, too. Just call me Violet Beauregarde; I may turn into a blueberry!

2. Fresh

Fire up the grill for this Grilled Halloumi Blueberry Salad. You'll love its savory bite in this wholesome salad with fresh blueberry salad dressing!

Sometime after I came home from a trip to New York, my best friend from childhood emailed me a link. “I think you should do something with grilled cheese if you haven’t already,” her note started.

That was a few months ago, and her suggestion has been sitting in the back of my mind. What really stuck was the idea of grilling cheese, and the melty goodness that yields to the knife when you slice through it. But I was also thinking about the place we met for a quick lunch during that trip – it was one of those quick, assembly line restaurants that can process hundreds of hungry office workers in a lunch hour, ourselves included, and it was all about salads. I had opted for a falafel salad, and while I found myself wishing my salad dressing had more kick, I wasn’t really there for the salads anyway. We had half an hour to catch up a many year gap before she had to head back to work.

Transform fresh blueberries into this delicious salad dressing and drizzle it all over a Grilled Halloumi Blueberry Salad!(...)

Bakery Style Buttermilk Blueberry Muffins - Save yourself a trip to the store - make these cake like muffins at home!

I’ve got a case of the summertime blues. The only thing is, it’s not yet summer, and these blues aren’t getting me down. Actually, it’s quite the opposite. Blueberry fever has hit, perhaps replacing my rhubarb streak, and it’s not even summer berry season!

To deal with the blueberry blues, I had to make something sweet, and I’ve been baking batches of muffins, the kind that usually calls to you from behind the counter at the coffee shop, their crumbly tops giving you just a peek at the blueberries bursting within. It’s the muffin that you know you want, but maybe shouldn’t get.

Five Little Things I loved the week of May 13, 2016.

Five little things I loved this week:

1. Ribs

As you know, I’ve been cooking up ribs this week – gearing up for grilling season – and it turns out some of you have been, too! I love hearing back from you guys and am so happy to know you’ve been enjoying my Baby Back Ribs with Blueberry Balsamic Barbecue Sauce and Baby Back Ribs with Fiery Peach BBQ Sauce. If you loved those, you’ve got to try the Rhubarb-Wine BBQ Sauce I posted earlier this week. My husband declared it his personal favorite.

1. Real Homemade Bagels?

And when I say “real” I mean the kind I miss from home in New York. Nothing yet comes close, when it comes to finding good bagels here in California, but I think I will be giving this recipe a try.(...)

Planning a trip to San Francisco and wine country? Come join me for an insider's pick on places to sip, savor and stay in Sonoma!

One of the questions I often get, from friends, family and strangers alike, goes something like this:

“I’m visiting wine country this weekend! Where do you recommend I go?”

With a world of delicious food and wine at my fingertips, I often struggle to give a brief answer, because I have lived here for over 15 years, and yet, the exploring is never ending. But my first question back will be, “how long will you be in town?”

A Taste of Sonoma: A Weekend Visitor's Guide - A trip to San Francisco isn't complete without a visit to Sonoma.

A Taste of Sonoma: A Weekend Visitor's Guide - Patz & Hall provides a unique tasting when in wine country.

If you’re planning a trip to San Francisco, a trip to the vineyards is in order, and even if your visit will be a short one, it IS possible to squeeze in a delicious experience, without having to drive very far. A short hop across the Golden Gate bridge and through Marin, you will find yourself in Sonoma, where it is possible to experience a wine country where you do not have to compete with massive tour buses and crowded tasting rooms. For me, Sonoma has the charm and the solitude of wine country that I crave, along with so many intimate wineries that will leave you feeling as though you really got to know the hands behind the bottle. (...)

We all know rhubarb is amazing in sweet desserts, but you'll love it even more in a savory Rhubarb-Wine BBQ Sauce! Put it on ribs, grilled chicken, and more!

I’m not sure whether or not to feel badly for my beloved rhubarb. On the one hand, it is well loved – adored, even – in all kinds of sweet goodies. I think by now you know how much I love rhubarb. From cakes to compotes to everything in between, I’m afraid the season doesn’t last long enough for me to play with one of my favorite ingredients.

On the other hand, rhubarb has been typecast, wouldn’t you agree? Sometimes I wonder what it thinks – that is, if it could think. Maybe it wishes, “I just want to be like all the other vegetables!” or perhaps, “I’m tired of being cooked up in sweet dishes!”

Think rhubarb is just for dessert? Think again! You'll love it in a tangy Rhubarb-Wine BBQ Sauce!(...)
