Five Little Things

Happy Friday, friends! This week has flown by, and for us, it’s been all about celebrating our kids and their accomplishments at school and beyond. The year has come to a close for them, and there has been lots of pomp and circumstance, even if they’ve changed the words around, calling graduations “promotions,” and whatnot. As a mama, you can imagine how all the emotions were swirling up inside – pride, sadness, excitement, happiness — in all it’s been a wonderful week, and full of sweet moments.

Speaking of sweet, all this celebrating means all kinds of sweet treats, right? So how lucky that we are celebrating a cute food holiday today (aren’t we always?).

With that in mind, here are Five Little Things I loved this week:

1. Doughnuts

As luck would have it, today is National Doughnut Day, and how timely, as I am working on a new doughnut (or donut, whichever way you wish to spell it) recipe for you! But until it is ready to share, you really should try these Blueberry Lemon Glazed Baked Donuts! There’s also churro doughnut holes, Nutella filled mini doughnuts, baked coconut doughnuts and pineapple upside down cake doughnuts!

2. Graduations

Our week was consumed with both my daughter and son’s graduations! I couldn’t be prouder – or more emotional, ha ha! You can imagine how my inner sap was nearly bawling as my son’s slideshow of his elementary years flashed on the screen – where did the time go? As I was looking for some small things to commemorate their milestones, I found two precious books that I think are perfect for gifting a graduate, and I thought I would share it with you, too. The Seuss-isms book is especially appropriate for all ages, graduate or not.

3. Summer Reading

Speaking of books, back when I had more time, one of my favorite things about summer vacation was all the summer reading. I’m determined to fit in more time for reading this year, and I’m checking out these 19 summer books that promise to keep us up all night reading.

While I’m on the topic of reading, let’s talk about writing for a second, shall we? I got a kick out of how Google has published a map that shows, state by state, the words that people most often Google “how to spell.” If you live in some of the more, um, perplexing states – like New Hampshire, Wisconsin and New Jersey, I think you’ll get a good chuckle!

4. The Art of Practice

Now that school is done, I know it will be easy for my son to slack off at practicing his instrument. But for anyone who has had to practice – whether it’s an instrument, a sport, public speaking, or even a goal (going to the gym, anyone?) – I’m guessing you will find this read on the art of practice fascinating and inspiring.

5. Talent

This is the time of year we celebrate all that practice and talent, right? My kids had their performances all last week, and I was so excited to watch my son play in the school band, and my daughter sing her heart out as Maria in the Sound of Music at our local theatre company. Talent shows are also fun — and if you haven’t seen this drum troop, you should really check them out.

BUT before you go, my daughter wanted to also share this talented 12 year old! I am so impressed, and apparently so is the rest of the country!

Enjoy your weekend, everyone!
