Thirteen Julys ago, I moved to California. That’s 13 years of some of the happiest moments of my life, over a decade of immersing myself in a life quite different from my childhood in New York. It sounds like quite a lifetime, to have lived here for so long, but I still pull from memories that began in a little house on a steep hill, in a tight neighborhood close to the bridges that spanned boroughs, with doting aunts who lived not too far away.

Today, I’m sharing one of my fondest and earliest food memories in a blog series on Avocados From Mexico. I hope you join me for a cold glass of Avocado Milk — if you’ve never tried drinking your avocados, I assure you, you are in for a real treat. My son will happily attest to that, this is his favorite drink.

Avocado Milk

Avocados aren't just for guacamole! In the Philippines and throughout Southeast Asia, Avocado Milk (avocado milk smoothie or avocado milkshake) is a simple, refreshing treat!

Ingredients

  • 1 large ripe avocado
  • 2-3 tablespoons granulated sugar to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups ice cold skim milk

Instructions

  • Halve and pit the avocado, slice into quarters and peel the skin. Discard the pit and peel.
  • Place avocado slices in a large glass with the sugar and mash, creating a paste. Whisk in the milk. For a more creamy texture, like a smoothie, place all the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Pour the avocado milk into two glasses and serve immediately.

Notes

One of the best things about avocado milk is that there are no hard or fast rules. I prefer my drink milky, with a few chunks of avocado in each sip. But some like it smooth and creamy. Also, feel free to experiment with your favorite soy or almond milk.

Hi Danee, Thanks for alerting me to the fact that the link to my guest post and recipe no longer work – I have updated this post with the recipe, and I do hope that helps. It still requires milk, but you can substitute dairy for soy, almond, cashew, etc.

The linkelinked page no longer exists. Maybe you can put the recipe here…

I have a favorite recipe for avocado and almond milk with a bit of vanilla, and some Stevia. I love it. It’s based on drinks sold in Asia. Would be interested to see if yours is the same blender beverage or another variation!

I’ve been making this since I was a kid. In the Philippines we make avocado shake & ice cream.

We always do this at home! So good! We also add a little bit of cream, put in the freezer, and it becomes instant avocado ice cream (or ice candy)!
