Edible Excursions | A Special San Francisco Ferry Building Tasting for Japan Relief

When I first moved to San Francisco over ten years ago, The Ferry Building was in the early stages of a renaissance long overdue. The registered landmark, which in its heyday had been a San Francisco gateway from the Gold Rush to the 1930’s, had eventually succumbed to neglect for several decades, particularly during the post war era, when automobiles and bridges ruled and ferry transportation fell out of favor. But in the late 1990’s an effort to breath new life into this beautifully designed building resulted in a four year renovation.

Nowadays, The Ferry Building is one of my favorite places, and something I consider a must-see, if you are planning a visit to San Francisco. The reason? Food, of course.

The Ferry Building Marketplace is now home to some of the Bay Area’s best and significant food purveyors, including Cowgirl Creamery’s Artisan Cheese, Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker, Frog Hollow Farm, Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant, and Acme Bread Company. It houses acclaimed restaurant Slanted Door, and a city location for the best oysters at Hog Island Oyster Company. And on select days, it hosts one of the best farmer’s markets in the country. Visitors can literally taste their way through the Bay Area, all under one roof.

Imagine if there was a way to experience this very special place with an insider’s perspective. What if you could meet the passionate artisans and farmers behind the delicious food? And do so while supporting a wonderful cause?

You can. Edible Excursions offers a very special way to experience all the culinary delights the Bay Area has to offer, providing intimate guided explorations at culinary hot spots throughout the city and beyond.

And on Thursday, May 26, 2011 from 11:00am to 1:00pm, Edible Excursions founder and CEO Lisa Rogovin will personally host an exclusive culinary excursion at the Ferry Building, in an effort to do her small part to help people of earthquake and tsunami ravaged Japan. Rogovin’s private tasting exploration of the Ferry Building Marketplace and Farmers Market will include the participation of business owners and farmers who will share behind-the-scenes stories and local, seasonal tastes.

Whether you are a Bay Area native, local to San Francisco, or visiting from the far reaches of the globe, I’m sure you will agree, what a wonderful way to experience a lunchtime of gastronomical bliss. So if you work across the street, consider taking a long lunch at the Ferry Building! Or maybe you just happen to be visiting from out of town next week. I hope you consider supporting this worthy cause.

You brought me back memories of the Foodbuzz affair we all attended. I want to go back so bad. Happy memories of eating and shopping at the Ferry Building.

You’ve brought back some great memories for me, of my holiday in SF 3 years ago. I found myself drawn back to the Ferry Building as it has such character and such interesting food stalls/places to eat. Unfortunately I won’t be in SF any time soon but hope the fund raiser goes fantastically well.
