If you were to travel back in time – not too long ago (to me) – or to prehistoric times (to my kids) – you would have found my friends and I, uniform clad and walking from our high school to the 7-11 two blocks away. It was our first stop after an afternoon of rehearsals after school, and slurpees were our weakness. We would layer the flavors, top them with the clear dome lids, and walk to the bus stop, sipping them the whole way home.

I smile when I think of those days – they were silly times, with a lot of singing, ridiculous joking, and heartfelt love. I spoke with one of my girlfriends the other day, and I forgot to ask her the last time she had a slurpee. For me, I couldn’t even tell you. It just might have been our last day of senior year.

These days, I’ll make slushies…better-for-you than slurpees, that’s for sure. Made with frozen fruit, it’s been my kids’ number one request on these triple digit summer days. For the 4th of July, I thought I would layer them up, old-school style, and I think these red, white and blue slushies would be festive for both kids and grown ups! You may want to add a splash of vodka or tequila (or pick whichever poison makes you happy) to make it even more fun, I leave that up to you!

How to Make Red White and Blue Slushies

The ingredients are simple. For the red layer, blend lemonade, frozen strawberries (or raspberries), and agave nectar in a blender. The white layer is made with coconut milk, ice, and agave nectar. Layer the slushie mixtures in glasses and top with fresh blueberries for the blue layer. Enjoy immediately!

Summer time slurpees and I go wayyyy back, too. Nothing like ’em – but I have a feeling these coconut slushies would give them a serious run for their money!! GORGEOUS!
