Simple Sundays | Scraps of Dough

Little bits. Those odds and ends. You end up with little trimmings, whenever you make pies and tarts.

What do you do with them?

Sometimes, I let my children have the scraps, to make with them whatever they please. Whether or not their creations make it into the oven does not matter – sometimes they just like having their own dough to play with, just like mama.

But if I’m alone when I am baking, I re-roll the scraps of dough to make my own personal hand pies. I fill them with whatever is on hand, my favorite jams, chocolates, even Nutella. These little beauties are filled with golden lemon curd. No waste and an extra little treat for me!

In case you feel like making a full batch of hand pies, here is some inspiration from the archives:

Lovely hand pies, I could have a couple while engaging in a deep philosophical discussion of what came first – the recipe or the ingredient ;-)

what can be better than a simple delicious hand pie! since i have 2 hands may I have 2 please!! sometimes the simplest pleasures come from we have left over, but its knowing what to do with the odds and ends that takes talent, and you my friend have an abundant supply of talent!

Thanks Chef Dennis, you are too kind. It’s not so much talent, it’s just a desire not to waste…and a desire to have my own special treat!!

Great way to used leftovers! I would probably go for nutella or chocolate ganache filling if I had to choose… :)

I always give those scraps to my daughter so she can play with them. :) But, I think I will save them next time and fill ’em up with Nutella! YUMMO!

Great idea! When I cut off corners of brownies (for those who don’t like the edges), I repurpose them and cut them up in bits and sprinkle them on ice cream!
