When I first moved to San Francisco over ten years ago, The Ferry Building was in the early stages of a renaissance long overdue. The registered landmark, which in its heyday had been a San Francisco gateway from the Gold Rush to the 1930’s, had eventually succumbed to neglect for several decades, particularly during the post war era, when automobiles and bridges ruled and ferry transportation fell out of favor. But in the late 1990’s an effort to breath new life into this beautifully designed building resulted in a four year renovation.
Nowadays, The Ferry Building is one of my favorite places, and something I consider a must-see, if you are planning a visit to San Francisco. The reason? Food, of course.
The Ferry Building Marketplace is now home to some of the Bay Area’s best and significant food purveyors, including Cowgirl Creamery’s Artisan Cheese, Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker, Frog Hollow Farm, Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant, and Acme Bread Company. It houses acclaimed restaurant Slanted Door, and a city location for the best oysters at Hog Island Oyster Company. And on select days, it hosts one of the best farmer’s markets in the country. Visitors can literally taste their way through the Bay Area, all under one roof.
