Five Little Things
Five Little Things I loved the week of January 30, 2026: family trees, hallway acoustics, the love for Moira Rose, and more.
This week has been a doozy. How are you? I know many of you are dealing with cold, winter weather, and while here in the Bay Area things are relatively warm and pleasant, our house has been hit with some of the best that germ season has to offer. My Arroz Caldo (Filipino Chicken and Rice Soup) is soothing for these kinds of weeks, and I will probably make some Ginger Tea, too. I hope this week’s Five Little Things helps to bring some warmth to you.
Here are Five Little Things I loved this week:
1. Butternut Squash
This week, I’ve been obsessed with the humble butternut squash. The renewed love is due to the newest recipe I just posted: Honey and Habanero Roasted Butternut Squash. So, if you love hot honey, you will especially appreciate this simple recipe!
It was a good reminder of how much I adore this versatile ingredient! From soups to harnessing its creaminess in creamed corn, I hope you check out the many butternut squash recipes on the site.
2. A Precious Family Tree
I am a fan of Finding Your Roots on PBS, and especially loved how Professor Gates told the story of how he delivered a very special family tree to none other than Pope Leo.
3. Puppy Birthdays
This week, our little girl turned 3! I made her a birthday cake that we all could enjoy, and I hope to share that with you soon!
4. Hallway Acoustics
When you grow up singing, there’s something about good acoustics that is so thrilling. This is a beautiful example.
5. Love for Moira Rose
The loss of Catherine O’Hara is felt keenly all over the world. For me, her motherly roles in Home Alone and Schitt’s Creek were my particular favorites. Rest in peace, Ms. O’Hara. Thank you for bringing laughter to us. This clip says it all.
Stay joyful, my friends.
