Oops | Nutella Mascarpone Phyllo Bites

My fingers fumbled as I eagerly opened a new jar of Nutella. A 26.5 oz jar. Oh yes, I’m serious about my Nutella. If they sold it by the gallon, I’m afraid I would but it. I may even consider getting a Costco membership if bigger jars of Nutella were sold there. (People are usually shocked when I tell them I loathe Costco. I just do. Please don’t hate this non-bulk shopper.)

As the lid spun off and was set aside, I punctured the gold foil seal with a little too much gusto, and…my finger fell in. After I quickly remedied the dirtied finger with a swift lick, I had to share my happy accident with all of you on twitter and facebook. And I just chuckled, because, well, so many of you understand these Nutella accidents very well. I knew you would.

I wasn’t looking for trouble when I opened that jar. I clearly had a purpose and these Nutella Mascarpone Phyllo Bites are no accident.

I saw these Mini Fillo (Phyllo) Shells at the store the other day and thought they were so adorable and convenient. I could see so many ways to play with them, for both sweet and savory creations. But to start, I wanted to fill them up with something that tasted like a rich Nutella cheesecake. These bites of indulgence were so easy to assemble and worked so beautifully in those crispy shells.

The other benefit? By the end of the assembly, all my fingers were a delicious mess.

Nutella Mascarpone Phyllo Bites

Makes 15 bites.

If you have a piping bag, it makes it easier to fill the shells neatly. But if you don't have any, no worries, just spoon the filling in!

Ingredients

1/3 cup Nutella
1/3 cup mascarpone cheese
2 tablespoons mascarpone cheese
1 tablespoon powdered sugar
15 mini phyllo shells
optional garnish (e.g. hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, chocolate curls)

Instructions

In a medium bowl, whisk together the Nutella and 1/3 cup of mascarpone cheese until well blended. Place in piping bag. Blend 2 tablespoons mascarpone cheese and powdered sugar and place in piping bag. Fill the shells with the Nutella mixture and accent with the sweetened mascarpone. Top with a garnish, if desired. Store chilled until ready to serve. They may also be frozen in an airtight container.

Yeah, I’m not sure how many times I’ve had a soup spoon “accidentally” fall into Nutella…

I stumbled upon your blog searching for recipes using mascarpone cheese and phyllo cups!! These look perfect for a party I’m throwing soon.
If I decide to make them agead of time and keep them in the freezer do you suggest just leaving them out a bit to defrost in room temp before serving? How long will they keep in the freezer? Thanks!!

Hi Jee, great idea to prepare them in advance. I’ve never stored them in the freezer, but that should work well, just defrost in the refrigerator well ahead of time. I don’t know how long it will last in the freezer but as long as you keep it tightly sealed, it should be great!

I have never heard of mascarpone and wouldn’t even know where to buy it. Can anyone tell me please? These look so yummy and I love Nutella. I usually just scoop some out on a spoon and lick away. LOL. The only thing I’ve ever put it on were Cup cakes!

Hi Angela, mascarpone is an Italian cheese, much like cream cheese. You can find it in most grocery dairy sections. If you live near a Trader Joe’s, they have a wonderful mascarpone cheese. Good luck, you will love it!

No piping bag?? Zip Lock bags are a good substitute and are disposable!

Full Disclosure: I LOVE Costco, and don’t care for Nutella. Never mind all that – Costco does sell Nutella. Two giant containers for like $8. Have fun!

Awesome! Thanks for the tip – I will have to ask one of my friends to grab some jars for me when they go :)

Now the context around the Nutella “gravity storm” is clear! Great post. Will have to check out the phyllo cups…specialty store or a Whole Foods?

Many gourmet grocers carry these phyllo cups – hope you find them in your grocer’s freezer section!

Um, loooooove! And it’s no bake, too. I’ll have to search my grocery for those little phyllo shells, I feel like they could totally save the day whenever I need to make a lot of treats for a party or something. Great pictures!

These little phyllo bites look so elegant. These would be dangerously addicting. One, two bites and I’m on the third one already. Congrats on the Top 9 with these, today.

Those flaky shells and the creamy chocolate look so delicious. My Costco membership was through my last job and I haven’t missed it so guess that’s a good thing.

Hi Kita! What, not 100% sold on Nutella yet? Yes, it does sound like you need a few more accidents :) I love Nutella simply, especially with bananas :)

Great pics and recipe, thanks for sharing. I think the garnish should not be optional, it beautifies the presentation. And the combo nutella-macadamia nut is delish!

Haha, a “fingers falling in” Nutella accident isn’t so bad – mine often turn into the ” whole jar of Nutella falling into my tummy” type. Oops! Glad you saved some for these bites, though – they look lovely, and perfect for serving at the end of a cocktail party…

Liren-These look amazing!! I adore Nutella and I have to avoid baking aisle at Costco b/c they DO have them there! Two gigantic jars for a reasonable price;) Such pretty phyllo cups.

Oh Lora, you are enabling my Nutella addiction by letting me know that Costco does carry them. Good thing I no longer have a membership, otherwise, we’d be in trouble :)

Aren’t these cute! I love that you combined two of my favorite things–Nutella and mascarpone. These bites are so beautiful!

It made me smile that you mentioned detesting Costco. I have a membership card via my office so I go a couple of times a year. My cart is never full when I go with only two people in the house but their wine, meat, and produce selections are actually pretty good. And if I remember correctly, yes, they do sell large Nutella jars! I’ve bought them, LOL! :-) Your phyllo bites would be a great use for the 2-pack jumbo Nutella jars. I never run out of it either. :-)

    Happy Weekend!
