Five Little Things
Five Little Things I loved the week of January 17, 2025: care packages for LA, magical music, favorite recipes, and more.
As I sit here writing to you, the house is still again. We have returned to empty nesting, and while it was so good to have the kids home for the holidays, as they get back to school, it’s time for me to go back to school and work, too. Here are Five Little Things I loved this week:
1. Revisiting Old Favorites
These last few weeks, especially with the kids home from college, I have been cooking many of their comfort food requests, recipes that I have shared with you over the years. There were multiple requests for Instant Pot Chicken Adobo, Kabocha Squash Chili, Mechado (Filipino Beef Stew), Filipino-style Picadillo (Giniling), and maybe most comforting of all, Arroz Caldo (Filipino Chicken and Rice Soup).
I also revisited my recipe for Lentil Okra Curry. Sometimes you just want a cozy, wholesome, plant-forward option, and right now, this is it for me. The okra has been so beautiful at the farmer’s market, and it works so nicely in this recipe.
2. Care Packages
If you or your loved ones and friends have been impacted by the Los Angeles fires, would you like to receive a food care package? Our friends at Roots Farm Fresh had reached out to me after the fires and would like to send care packages with some of their delicious sweet potato and white potato products, as well as other items such as totes, shirts, socks. I told them I would reach out to you all directly, so if you could benefit from this thoughtful package, please reach out to me. DM me on Instagram and I will send you the Google Form.
3. A Good Read
Are you reading anything good right now? I’ve been immersed in The Kitchen House, by Kathleen Grissom. It’s an older book, published in 2010, but I’m so glad I finally started reading it. Be prepared for all the emotions.
4. Musical Magic
I’ll never forget the summer I watched John Williams conduct the Chicago Symphony at Ravinia, the music from Star Wars, Superman, and more echoing through the wooded amphitheater. I’ve always been such a fan. We recently watched the documentary Music by John Williams on Disney+. He is such a talent, if you are a fan of his work, be sure to check it out.
5. Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
My sister shared this reel of a behind-the-scenes prank on Mr. Rogers. What a sweet man. I hope this brings a smile to your face and warms your heart as it did mine. If you grew up with him, then you will understand.
Stay joyful!
