Five little things I loved this week.

1. Homemade Pizza

It’s only recently that I have found decent (if not excellent) pizza in the Bay Area. You know how discerning my native New York tastebuds can be. But there’s something about homemade pizza that makes up for all that, and this week, I put my pizza stones to work. I made one that I can’t wait to share with you, and this one (pictured above) for my children, who chastised me for not putting enough olives on top. Their cheerful yums sure made up for the scolding, though. “Better than Amici’s!” they yelled out. That’s the one time I’ll allow yelling at the table :)

2. French Press

Ever since my husband brought home a French press, my coffee maker has been seeing a little less love. I really enjoy brewing my coffee this way, and it’s not just the flavor, which truly is better. There’s something about the ritual of it all, the patient waiting, the act of pressing the water into the grounds. I just love it.

3. Girl Time with my Daughter

Weekends are precious family time, and we usually like to enjoy activities all together. But last Sunday we split up. My husband and son spent the day at a SF Giant’s game, while my daughter and I indulged in girl time. I have to admit, there were many moments I missed my boys, but my husband and I sent pictures back and forth as we enjoyed our days. For my daughter, there were some musts: a visit to the zoo, pedicures with girlfriends, and treats like bubble tea and mochi. It was such a special day for us, and I am so thankful for the memories we made together.

4. The Question of “American” Food

As my children grow up in this melting pot of swirling cuisines, it’s always interesting to stop and consider: what IS “American” food? I recently had the joy of meeting Jamie Schler of Life’s A Feast at IACP recently, and she wrote a piece for the Huffington Post exploring just that. It was through this that I learned of a TED talk by Jennifer 8. Lee, and it’s really worth a watch:

5. Comedic Duo

You know how much I love Ellen, and this week, there seemed to be some really hilarious moments. Between a tipsy Diane Keaton and SNL’s Kate McKinnon taking over as Ellen, I couldn’t decide what I wanted to share. But whenever she has Dennis Quaid on the show doing pranks, it’s magic. He plays to her direction brilliantly. So I’ll leave you with this chuckle.

Happy Friday, everyone, I wish you rest and time with the ones you love.

Oh and btw – during the two weeks post-conference that I spent at my mom’s in Florida, I got to watch Ellen every single day!

Oh Liren, it was so wonderful finally getting to meet you even if it was much too briefly. Thanks so much for the shout out about my TED/HP piece which, I must add, I wrote during the madness of the conference! This is a topic I would love to talk about with you.

That pizza looks delicious! You’ve gotta try my new favorite springtime pizza, shaved asparagus and clams w/a little mozzarella, garlic & olive oil, spinkle some green onions on right after you take it out of the oven, so yummy! (Inspired by smittenkitchen’s shaved asparagus pizza) Can’t wait to try your recipe!!

LOL, Marcie, sometimes if it means getting a break in the kitchen, ordering pizza works for me too ;)
