At the start of each new year, I like to add a fresh smoothie to my repertoire. After 20 years of making smoothies, you would think that the smoothie might be losing its luster, but that can never, ever happen. My blender gets used every single day, often multiple times a day. And today’s smoothie embraces my latest obsession.
Medjool dates.
As a little girl, I first tasted Medjool dates many years ago when my aunt brought us a box when she was visiting from Oman, where they lived for many years. But I will admit that my love for Medjool dates truly began last year.
I found myself adding dates to my daily breakfast oats, dicing them up into little cubes, and swirling them into my oats, along with a homey, unphotogenic mash of ripe banana and almond butter. I’ve been snacking on them, tossing them in salads, and baking with them.
And as you now know, I’ve also been blitzing them up into a green breakfast smoothie that I must admit is a little more photogenic than my bowl of mushy oats (though equally delicious!).
It’s a wonderful, refreshing way to kick-start my day, keeping me fueled all morning long!
Date Smoothie
Medjool dates are a wonderful source of potassium (more than a banana!), pack in a lot of fiber, and add a natural sweetness to smoothies. I love popping about 3 dates into the blender, along with almond milk, a ripe banana, frozen mangoes, spinach, a dollop of almond butter, and a few spoonfuls of oats. This green breakfast smoothie leaves me satisfied and ready to tackle the day!

Some tips to consider as you make this smoothie:
- This recipe makes for a deliciously creamy green breakfast smoothie. If you wish your smoothie to be a little lighter and frostier, add some ice to the smoothie. I start with 1/4 cup, but feel free to add an additional 1/4 cup of ice to the blender (1/2 cup total).
- The sweetness of the smoothie comes from the banana and the dates. Be sure to use a very ripe banana.
- Dried Medjool dates can come in various degrees of “dryness.” Some are moist and plump, while others can be much drier. If you find your dates are quite dry or stale, consider soaking them in water to bring back the moisture, which will help with the blending process.

Looks great! Any idea for what I could replace the banana with ?
Hi Alexandra! If you don’t want to use banana in your smoothie, you can add some avocado to add creaminess to the smoothie. It won’t add sweetness, so you may want to adjust by adding a touch more dates. Hope that helps!
This is delicious! I do not keep ice around, but I do freeze the whey left over from when I make Greek yogurt. Instead of ice cubes, I used cubes of whey.
What a smart idea to use the iced whey cubes in the green date smoothie, Jeri! Thanks for the awesome tip!
Do you not blend in the hemp seeds in your green date smoothie?
Hi Gigi – you certainly can, but I love the little crunch, so I just sprinkle it on top :)
great smoothie idea, had never thought about dates but an excellent sweetener when I feel like it, like these other smoothie ingredients too, thank you!
:)
Thank you, Sabrina! This has been so satisfying, and yes, the dates are a wonderful sweetener. I just made another one today!
