There was another birthday in our family this week. You see, my other little sidekick in the kitchen turned one last Friday.

Almost a year ago, we brought home this little guy.

Meet Wilbur. He’s an English Bulldog.

As a puppy, Wilbur was the cutest little ball of pudge and wrinkles, his piggy noises snorting around the house adding to the cacophony. Wilbur was the addition my daughter dreamed of begged for, and like the crazy parents that we are, we gave in. He joined our family of two kids, two cats, and two hamsters, making it feel like a mini farm.

I never imagined we’d have such a full house, but he has been such a great dog, I can’t complain. He sleeps by my feet when I type up posts for you, and he is always underfoot in the kitchen, hoping for any random scraps to accidentally come his way. Garlic, scallions, even jalapeno – Wilbur has sampled them all.

A year later, and this is Wilbur. Where did my little cutie pie go?

I take solace in the remaining wrinkles.

Wilbur loves to eat, especially if he is lucky enough to get people food. I know there are some who might be shocked to hear that we indulge him once in a while, but he gets pretty wholesome things. His favorites by far are bananas and papaya, and the smell of popcorn drives him wild.

I thought it would be fun to indulge him on his birthday with Homemade Dog Biscuits.  Alright, who am I kidding…I bought dog bone cookie cutters 15 years ago and have been waiting for an excuse to use them! To say that he loves the treats would be an understatement. Try them for your four-footed friends – I’m sure they will love them, too.

Update January 30, 2018
Several years ago, Wilbur passed away, but his little brother Bruno shares his love for these homemade dog biscuits. I recently filmed this video with him.

Notes

Note on flaxseeds: Since publishing this recipe, I have learned that the omega-3 fatty acids in the flaxseeds are better absorbed when ground first. While you can leave the flaxseed whole, the health benefits are much better when you take the time to grind the seeds!

These sound great! About how many treats does this recipe yield? What is the approximate shelf life
also, should they be stored in the fridge? Thanks!

Hi Christine! As indicated on the recipe card, this makes about a dozen treats (depending on the size of your cookie cutter!) and they keep at room temperature for about a week. If you wish to store in the refrigerator, they last longer, though my dog usually finishes it by a week! Hope that helps.

Our dogs (Cash & Abby) LOVE THEM!  Thank you for the recipes.  I’ve started reading about store bought dog treats and the chemicals that are needed to make them.  A great easy alternative for my kids!!!!!!!

    The introduction of the baking of processed cereals including the creation of flour provided a more reliable source of food. Egyptian sailors carried a flat, brittle loaf of millet bread called dhourra cake, while the Romans had a biscuit called buccellum.;

hi, i wanted to ask, are the flaxseeds replacing egg? don’t have flaxseeds so i was wondering what to substitute for them, or if they’re just extra yums for the dog.

Hi Nina, the flaxseeds are just extra yumminess and crunch for the pups. There’s enough moisture in this that eggs aren’t necessary as a binder. Hope your dog enjoys it!

Oh my gosh what a wonderful post, I have just got up, its a dreary foggy Spring morning, it should be sunshine but seeing your post and those adorable photos of Wilbur brought lots of smiles to me. He is gorgeous and I had to giggle at your “year later” photo and his little teeth poking through.

I am doing a before and after shot of my bedroom next week on my blog, it would be cute to add a “before” (puppy) and “after” (toothy grin shot) alongside the bedroom makeover to bring a smile to my readers. I would link back to your doggie biscuits recipes? No problem if you want to keep him to yourself :) :).

Wilbur is one handsome little gut. We have an Engluah bulldog too named Sally. I always love reading about the mannerisms if if other Englishes. Our dogs are the same, they’d be good friends. Definetely going to whip these up fir Sally, she’s a fan of eating too.

Happy Birthday Wilbur! This little kitchen sidekick is not so little anymore, eh? My golden retriever is off-limits in the kitchen. Thanks for this post. I have never done homemade puppy treats before, maybe it is time to reward them with homemade goodies…

Wilber is SO cute! I can see why everyone fell in love with him and how adorable that he sleeps at your feet when you’re posting! The dog biscuits are adorable! Sunny Pup turns one on the 20th.

OMGhessoadorablywrinkledandcuteIjustwanteathimup! He reminds me so much of our bully, who had the same coloring – tan & white with a black mask. He would’ve loved these treats, as I’m sure our current Pupster of Disaster (also known as a Boxer) will. Happy Birthday, Wilbur and wishing you many more years of naps, treats and snuggles! 8-)

Oh my goodness this little pup is absolutely darling! Your photos are wonderful. I have 2 labs that I adore and they’re with me almost all the time. Life just isn’t the same without them.

What great dog treats. I have metal dog bone templates but have never made any yet. I think I’ll try your recipe. It looks easy and I’m sure my dogs would love them. Thanks for sharing.

    Alright, I don’t have a dog. I wish I’d have one (or a cat), but I can’t.

When I saw the pictures, I sqeaked a little. Not very loud and nobody actually heard me (hopefully), but I did. TOO CUTE!

I always keep some dog treats in the house in case friends with dogs come over or I accompany a friend of mine walking her dog. Given that those are a bit smelly, yours sound like a better (and extra special) idea!

Too bad I don’t have that kind of cookie cutter ;)

This post is breaking my heart! When I was in High School we had an English Bulldog. His name was Mugsy The Bruiser. He looked at lot like your guy. I felt so guilty when I abandoned him by leaving home for college. Sure he was always there waiting when I went home for visits, but it was never the same between us! GREG
