It’s hard to believe that 2023 is coming to a close. The year has been so rewarding, and I have you to thank. Thank you for continuing to cook with me and for your support! Some of my fondest memories this year are connecting with you via email and social media, continuing to work with some of my favorite brands, welcoming wonderful guests on the podcast, joining chefs and food-personalities worldwide in the cookbook We Cook Filipino (affiliate link) where I share the story behind my Vegetarian Pancit Bihon (Filipino Rice Noodles with Veggies), and sharing more new recipes here with you.
It’s time to reflect and see which recipes were your favorites!
Let’s look at the most popular recipes on Kitchen Confidante in 2023: the top five recipes published this year AND the top five recipes of all time.
Let the countdown begin!
Top Five Most Popular Recipes of 2023
The top five most popular recipes of 2023 published this year were:
5. Stir-fried String Beans With Tofu in Black Bean Sauce
This recipe for Stir-fried String Beans With Tofu in Black Bean Sauce came from my friend and podcast guest, Maggie Zhu, and her cookbook, Chinese Homestyle. Chinese Black Bean Sauce, whether homemade or store-bought, adds incredible umami flavor to a stir-fry of string beans and tofu. I make this dish quite often, and it's a deliciously simple, plant-forward meal!
4. Short Rib Tacos
Short Rib Tacos are a delicious way to spice up taco night! These beer-braised short rib tacos are easy to make in the slow cooker, and made spicy thanks to a delicious chipotle sauce!
3. Lettuce Salad with Mayonnaise Dressing
Sometimes we just need a simiple lettuce salad to keep in our back pocket. This is a good one to keep in mind. A fresh green salad is elevated with a simple, delicious mayonnaise dressing made with pantry ingredients!
2. Olive Bruschetta
I was inspired to share this recipe for Olive Bruschetta after an evening with the California Olive Oil Council. These flavorful bites are made for olive lovers, with a blend of green olives, black olives, red bell pepper, and capers served on baguette slices for an easy appetizer!
1. Seafood Risotto
This easy seafood risotto recipe comes from my friend Karista Bennett, after our podcast interview where we chat all things seafood and her cookbook, For the Love of Seafood. Her version is for risotto purists and topped with mixed seafood, including shrimp, crab, lobster, clams, or scallops — use whatever is locally available and in season!
Top Five Most Popular Recipes of All Time 2023
The top five most popular recipes of all time in 2023 were:
5. Mechado (Filipino Beef Stew)
Comfort in the form of a hearty stew can be found in nearly every country’s cuisine, and the Philippines is no different. Mechado, Filipino Beef Stew, is the Philippine’s version of the ubiquitous comfort food with a wonderful depth of flavor that comes from browned garlic, marinated beef, and the complex flavors of patis, or fish sauce. This is the first dish I ever made for my husband when we were dating, and I'm so glad that so many of you enjoy it, too!
4. Puto (Filipino Steamed Rice Cakes)
The varieties of puto, or steamed rice cakes, are as plentiful as the many regions of the Philippines. Try this easy recipe made with rice flour.
3. Taho (Filipino Silken Tofu with Sago Pearls and Syrup)
The first time I had Filipino Silken Tofu with Sago Pearls and Syrup, I fell in love. I like to describe it as a cross between silky pudding and sweet, scoopable boba! If you haven't tried it yet, promise me you'll give it a shot soon!
2. Lumpiang Shanghai (Filipino Spring Rolls (Lumpia)
Climbing up in the rankings this year is my family recipe for Lumpiang Shanghai - Filipino Spring Rolls (Lumpia). A Filipino fiesta isn’t complete without lumpia! This recipe comes from my Tita Leah, and continues its reign as reader favorite!
1. Microwaved Corn on the Cob
For the third year in a row, my post on How to Microwave Corn on the Cob was the most popular recipe of all time! I love how this simple method doesn't require boiling water (so handy when you live in a state plagued by drought), plus this method makes it so easy to remove the husk and the corn silk! I hope you give it a try!
With that, it’s time to say farewell to 2023. Thank you again to every one of you for cooking with me! I wish you and yours a healthy and happy 2024!
